PLANNING ADVICE
Thailand SIM or eSIM: what to choose before departure
Compatibility, validity, data and local numbers: compare SIM and eSIM for your journey rather than just the upfront price.
Start with your phone
Check that your phone accepts another operator’s SIM and, for eSIM, that your specific model supports it. eSIM avoids swapping a physical card; a traditional SIM may be easier if you prefer counter assistance. The best choice depends on device, duration and habits rather than the most advertised name.
Read what the plan actually includes
Compare validity, data allowance, speeds after any thresholds, hotspot and calls. A data-only offer may not include a Thai number for calling. Check when validity starts: purchase, installation and activation are not necessarily the same event. The operator’s current terms take precedence over an old online comparison.
Purchase and registration
AIS and True-dtac publish tourist offers on the official sites linked below. For local SIMs, prepare your passport and complete the operator’s registration through its own channels. Test data and browsing before leaving the counter or finishing online activation. Check settings with support before buying a second plan because the first appears not to work.
Prepare for arrival without a connection
Save accommodation details, confirmations and your transfer for offline access. Select the correct mobile data line and check home-network roaming costs; your home line may be needed for codes without supplying data. Coverage is not uniform on islands, trails or the lake: ask your accommodation what to expect locally.
