PLANNING ADVICE

Thailand beaches: how to choose your coastal base

Choose a Thai coastal base by atmosphere, season and transport, without rushing between too many islands.

Choose the atmosphere, not just the photograph

One destination can include quiet beaches, busy areas and service hubs. Decide whether you want walkable restaurants, excursions or long days on one beach. A beautiful photograph does not show accommodation distances or transport. Map your hotel, beach and arrival point before choosing.

Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui?

These are places to compare, not interchangeable options. Phuket combines beaches and urban life; around Krabi consider your base and desired outings; on Koh Samui compare different parts of the island. The useful question is which place suits your days. Explore destinations and their surroundings before adding a second base.

Season is part of the decision

Weather can affect sea conditions, excursions and boat services. Compare areas for your travel month, but seasonal patterns do not guarantee sunshine. Before booking, check conditions, local advisories and cancellation rules. Keep an on-land alternative such as food, markets, towns or temples.

How many accommodation changes do you need?

For a fifteen-day beach-focused draft, consider a short city stay, one coastal base, an optional second base and time to return. Count transfers as part of the holiday. Reduce changes for rest, or choose a base for excursions. Beach interests help prioritise the proposal, which you can still change.

Which islands suit your trip?

There is no ranking that suits everyone. Start with two geographical groups: Phuket and Koh Lanta on the Andaman side; Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the Gulf. Compare season and connections before choosing the exact neighbourhood. For an easy holiday, consider a base with nearby services and a few excursions; for exploration, compare activities and boat departures. Krabi is a province and a travel base, rather than one island: check whether you are staying in Ao Nang, town or elsewhere. On Phuket and Samui, your specific area matters greatly; the island name alone does not describe how quiet your holiday will be.

Before booking a beach holiday

Check four things together: month, exact accommodation area, beach access and return transfer. For Phuket and Krabi, decide whether you mainly want land-based exploration or boat outings. For Samui, Phangan and Tao, include ferries where needed, rather than just the flight south. Selecting only Central Thailand and the sea interest may produce a route without beaches: read the warning and add a coastal area. Interests describe what you want; areas determine where to look.
