PLANNING ADVICE
Is Thailand safe? Precautions and travel insurance
Plan with awareness and compare insurance for your actual activities, not only its price.

Is it safe to travel in Thailand?
There is no single answer for every region and activity. Before confirming stops, consult official travel advisories for areas to avoid and restrictions. In tourist destinations consider traffic, scams, valuables and sea conditions. Popularity does not make every excursion or rental safe. Assess your actual day and choose an alternative when you are not prepared.
Scooters and sea activities
Without riding experience, a scooter is not a necessary shortcut to enjoying Thailand. Check valid driving documents and vehicle category, helmet and insurance before renting. For boats and excursions check the operator, safety equipment and conditions; respect flags and closures. A paid booking should not persuade you to disregard a warning. Changing an itinerary activity can still make a good day.
Which insurance should you choose?
Compare medical expenses, practical assistance, medical repatriation, excesses and limits. Check how hospital payment is handled, not just the headline cover amount. Private treatment can be expensive, so premium price alone tells little. With cancellation cover, read the insured reasons: changing your mind is not the same as an insured event. Ask the provider for written clarification before purchasing.
The policy must match the trip
Check every country visited, full trip length, travellers’ ages, pre-existing conditions and planned activities. Diving, trekking and motorcycling can have specific terms or exclusions. Check the effect of missing required licences or alcohol. Bank-card insurance is not automatically enough: read activation requirements and maximum trip length. Keep assistance contacts, policy wording and claim instructions.
Who to contact for help
Save Thailand’s Tourist Police number, 1155, and your insurer’s assistance contact. Contact the appropriate emergency service for urgent problems; Italian travellers should also keep current embassy contacts. The Tourist Police Trust portal can help check providers and report scams, but it is not a commercial guarantee or a replacement for reading a contract. Keep booking copies available offline.
