Thailand vaccinations: preparing for a healthy trip

Entry requirements and recommended vaccinations are different. Prepare a travel-health consultation for your route.

What to bring to your travel-health appointment

Before the appointment prepare your travel dates and duration; every transit country; destinations and overnight stops; planned city, forest or rural activities; vaccination record; medication list and relevant medical conditions. If your route is undecided, bring the alternatives so the clinician can assess the actual areas. This page helps you prepare questions; it does not prescribe vaccines or medication. NaTHNaC is a UK travel-health reference. Travellers departing from Italy should also check Viaggiare Sicuri and their travel-health service; travellers elsewhere should use their own national guidance and clinician.

Are vaccinations compulsory?

For a usual trip from Italy without travel through yellow-fever-risk countries, do not confuse a recommended vaccination with a general entry requirement. Yellow fever certification may depend on origin and transit: check the whole flight itinerary, not just the final flight. Use official health and Thai authority guidance for exact conditions. A friend’s answer may not apply to a different route.

Which vaccines should you discuss?

Book a travel-health consultation ahead of departure and bring your vaccination record. The clinician assesses routine boosters and travel vaccines according to duration, destinations, activities and personal health. Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies and other vaccines are not one universal package. Mention rural trips, long stays, animal contact, pregnancy and ongoing treatment. Do not leave it until the last days: timing and doses depend on clinical assessment.

Mosquitoes: protect yourself during the day too

Bite prevention matters even after vaccination. Dengue occurs in Thailand and its mosquito vectors can bite during the day. Use an appropriate repellent as labelled, consider covering clothing and check accommodation protection. Malaria risk varies by location: seek advice for the exact area, especially rural or border regions. Do not choose medication solely because the country is Thailand.

Food, water and personal medication

Prepare regular medication in its original packaging with the necessary documentation. Some active ingredients require specific checks with the competent authorities. Choose safe food and water, practise hand hygiene and take heat seriously. Prepare a clear explanation of allergies for staff. Seek medical help for significant or persistent symptoms; an online article should not determine diagnosis or treatment.

Your route helps you prepare

Save your destinations and show them at the consultation: an urban trip and time in remote areas can require different decisions. Before you go contains further advice, while the sources below help check health updates. Seek prompt care after an animal bite or scratch even if vaccinated. If you become ill after returning, tell the clinician where you travelled.
