PLANNING ADVICE
Eating in Thailand with allergies or dietary requirements
Vegetarian, gluten-free, halal and allergies: how to communicate needs and check venues before travel.
Preferences and allergies need different checks
A cuisine tag helps choose a menu but does not guarantee absence of an ingredient or cross-contact. Distinguish preferences from medically necessary avoidance. For allergies and coeliac disease, prepare a suitable travel plan with your healthcare professional.
How to communicate at a restaurant
Prepare clear written information, checked in English and Thai, and keep it offline. Identify relevant ingredients and ask to speak with whoever prepares food. Ask about sauces, stocks, utensils and shared surfaces when relevant. A simple yes or translated menu does not replace mutually understood confirmation.
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or halal
Confirm ingredients and preparation directly: dish names or visible vegetables are insufficient. For halal, verify relevant certification or obtain precise venue information rather than inferring from cuisine. Our Thai and international selections describe menu style and do not certify these features.
Choose before you become hungry
Contact venues or accommodation in advance and keep their replies. If they cannot confirm management of your needs, choose an alternative. Carry what your healthcare professional has advised for emergencies and check insurance and assistance. Thailand’s official medical emergency number is 1669.
