Chiang Mai: where to stay, what to see and how long to spend
Chiang Mai combines temples and neighbourhoods with days outside the city. Consider it as a northern base, especially when you want time in villages without changing accommodation after every outing.
Plan from Chiang Mai ↗
Why choose this base
Chiang Mai suits a stay that balances the city and outings beyond it. Keep the same room for several nights and dedicate separate days to a village or the mountains. If sleeping in a village is your aim, plan that stay as a real base, with luggage and transfers, rather than treating it as a quick visit.
Where to stay
Consider the old city for walks among temples and historic gates. Nimman is an alternative for a more urban stay with cafés and services. With accommodation outside these areas, check evening transport: map distance alone does not explain how you will get back.
How long to spend
As an editorial starting point, consider 4 full days. Arrival, departure and any transfers are additional: nights depend on your schedule. Reserve the full day for a substantial excursion and reduce other activities. This is a suggestion to adapt, not a required duration.
What to see after choosing accommodation
Start with the old city and Wat Phra Singh; consider Doi Suthep as a separate outing. Reserve a dedicated day for Mae Kampong, or arrange an overnight stay with confirmed accommodation and transport. Doi Inthanon is another direction: do not squeeze it into the village day. Chiang Rai deserves a separate stop if you want to explore it at an easy pace.
Before confirming
Confirm outward and return transport for Mae Kampong and mountain outings, especially if you stay outside the city. Do not assume an app-based car will be available for the return. Check park access and conditions through official channels or your operator. Recheck weather and air quality before fixing dates: both affect outdoor activities.
