PLANNING ADVICE

Getting around Thailand: trains, buses, flights and islands

Compare door-to-door journeys, find booking portals and leave buffers between separate connections.

Which transport should you choose?

For long distances compare flights, trains and buses using the full journey: hotel to terminal, required arrival time, main leg and onward accommodation transfer. A short flight is not a short transfer. Trains can be part of the experience; buses may serve destinations without rail. Choose by schedule, comfort, luggage, total price and time rather than assuming one mode always wins.

Where can you book trains and buses?

Check State Railway of Thailand’s D-Ticket for trains and the official BKS portal for its buses. Compare date, class and exact departure and arrival points before paying. With an intermediary, compare fees, assistance and conditions with the operator. Keep your ticket and follow its instructions; a reservation confirmation is not always the boarding document. Search fares for your actual date, not an old example.

Stations and airports: check the exact name

Bangkok has multiple terminals and airports: BKK and DMK are different places. Copy the exact terminal from your ticket and locate it on the map rather than planning only for Bangkok. Do the same for stations and piers elsewhere. Separate bookings may not protect connections: allow for delays, baggage and traffic. Before an international flight, consider returning to the departure city ahead of the final day.

How do you reach the islands?

An island transfer can combine a flight or train, road transport and a ferry. Check where each leg ends and whether pier and hotel transfers are included. Review final departure times, luggage and cancellation conditions. Wind and sea conditions can change services, so keep an alternative and avoid a tight boat-to-flight connection. Compare the complete cost, not just the ferry ticket.

Grab, Bolt and private transfers

For local trips enter pickup and destination in Grab and, where available, Bolt; compare actual offers, vehicle category and extras. Grab notes that tolls and surcharges may be additional. In quieter areas check the return too. With arranged transfers, request a quote covering vehicle, passengers, bags, stops and inclusions. An app does not guarantee a ride everywhere or at every time.
