Phuket: where to stay, what to see and how long to spend
Phuket combines beaches, the old town and services on a large island. Your accommodation area matters: staying on Phuket does not mean being close to every beach or boat departure.

Why choose this base
Phuket works well when you want services, accommodation choices and a mix of beach time and cultural visits. For a relaxed trip, choose one beach area and group outings by location. If exploring the old town matters most, compare an urban base with a seaside one: your days and transfers will differ.
Where to stay
Compare Kata and Karon for a west-coast base, Patong for a livelier setting, and the old town for a mainly urban stay. A town stay is different from a beach hotel. Before booking, also consider the airport direction and the excursions you want.
How long to spend
As an editorial starting point, consider 4 full days. Arrival, departure and any transfers are additional: nights depend on your schedule. Reserve the full day for a substantial excursion and reduce other activities. This is a suggestion to adapt, not a required duration.
What to see after choosing accommodation
Choose a beach near your accommodation first, then use a separate outing for the old town or Wat Chalong. Viewpoints are another option to fit around the actual route. Avoid planning three distant beaches in one day: transfer time is part of the trip. Excursions to nearby islands depend on conditions and operations.
Before confirming
Check where your accommodation actually sits relative to the beach, visits and any excursion pier. A lower room price may mean longer transfers. For boat outings, confirm availability, sea conditions and current access with the operator; when swimming, follow beach flags and local instructions.
