Koh Samui: where to stay, what to see and how long to spend
Koh Samui is a seaside base in the Gulf of Thailand with beaches and areas offering different atmospheres. Choose your stretch of coast around the stay you want, then consider excursions rather than starting with an island-hopping list for every day.

Why choose this base
Consider Samui for a stay with one settled base, balancing beach time, short outings and a few visits. Choose an area for your evenings as well as your days, so that enjoying your interests does not mean frequently crossing the island. A sea excursion is an optional addition, not a commitment for every day.
Where to stay
Compare Chaweng and Lamai for services and a lively area; consider Bophut, Mae Nam or Choeng Mon as alternatives to compare with your pace. Individual accommodation and its beach position matter more than a broad label: check beach access, noise and journeys before booking.
How long to spend
As an editorial starting point, consider 4 full days. Arrival, departure and any transfers are additional: nights depend on your schedule. Reserve the full day for a substantial excursion and reduce other activities. This is a suggestion to adapt, not a required duration.
What to see after choosing accommodation
Allow time for your base’s beach and consider an outing to temples and other island sights. For Ang Thong, reserve a dedicated day only after confirming access and availability with the operator. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are not Samui neighbourhoods: adding them requires crossing schedules and time, or a separate base.
Before confirming
Compare a flight to Samui with any mainland-and-ferry arrival, counting every step to your accommodation. For Ang Thong, confirm operations and conditions with your operator. If you add Phangan or Tao, check pier, times and connection availability before deciding on a visit or a change of base.
