Chiang Rai: where to stay, what to see and how long to spend
A northern base for contemporary temples and landscapes: plan visits without turning Chiang Rai into a rushed outing from Chiang Mai.

Why stay here
Stay in Chiang Rai when northern temples and landscapes are important to your trip. Overnighting separates visits instead of squeezing every site and the return journey from Chiang Mai into one day. With few northern nights, decide which experiences matter before adding a second base.
Centre or countryside?
Compare central accommodation for walks and evening services with an outlying property for quiet. A scenic stay may require transport even for dinner. Ask how you will reach selected places and return: the room rate alone does not capture your stay’s cost.
Visits and days
As an editorial suggestion, allow two full days locally. Wat Rong Khun and Wat Rong Suea Ten are separate visits; Baan Dam is a museum rather than another temple. Group stops by direction and add a separate day for more distant landscapes. Arrival and departure need additional time.
How it fits a northern trip
Treat Chiang Rai as a stop before or after Chiang Mai and check the actual connection between accommodations. Do not assume a flight connects the two cities. To continue to the coast, count airport access, the flight and any boat journey: keep that day light.
